PODCAST: VERTIGO MEETS CAHIERS DU CINEMA A chance to listen to the discussions from the recent Crossing Borders season at the Institut francais, London The long overdue collaboration between Paris and London's two most intellectually ambitious film magazines, Vertigo and Cahiers du cinéma, finally came together with a series of talks, paired screenings, Q&As and UK premieres in June 2006. ![]() .
One of the highlights from the season was a series of round table discussions with writers including Iain Sinclair, film historian Ian Christie and film critic Jonathan Romney, as well as editors from both the magazines. Tracking Film Culture Film historian Ian Christie chairs a discussion on the key developments charted by both magazines, and the roles that these two publications have played in promoting a diverse film culture. In discussion are Jean-Michel Frodon (editor of Cahiers du cinéma), Holly Aylett (editor of Vertigo) and Emilie Bickerton (author of a forthcoming book on Les Cahiers du cinema and regular contributor to Vertigo). The Power of the Edge What space is given to the work of experimental filmmakers in France and the UK, and how does their work impact on mainstream cinema? A panel led by Vertigo co-editor Gareth Evans, with Emmanuel Burdeau (Cahiers du cinéma), Chris Darke (author and film critic), and the writer Iain Sinclair. Exchanging Images How does contemporary cinema function as a catalyst for cultural exchange in its stories, production and aesthetics? The world is poorly represented on British screens, but what is the impact of non-western cinema in France and the UK? Holly Aylett chairs a discussion with Jean-Michel Frodon (editor of Cahiers du cinéma), Suzy Gillett (the Institut francais' Mosaiques Festival programmer), Munir Kabir (producer), Linda Pariser (programmer at Manchester's Cornerhouse) and John Akomfrah (producer and director of Smoking Dogs Films).
