The latest issue of Vertigo-including an exclusive FREE DVD of Ken McMullen's feature '1871' The latest issue of Vertigo - Volume 4 Issue 3 - is out: in bookshops, on newsstands, on the website and, if you are a subscriber, in your own mailbox. 2 - EVENTS AND COURSES Film, Participation and Re-Enactment, Bristol, 12th September - 17th October Down at the Bamboo Club is a new Picture This exhibition of artists' video exploring the idea of legacy though participation, historic sites and events. Films include Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard's 'File Under Sacred Music ', re-enacting a 1978 performance by The Cramps at a California psychiatric hospital; 'Session (Sugar Version) ' examining the mental health of the slaves that kept Bristol's sugar trade profitable, and Mark Wilsher's 'The Use of Money ', based on a a speech by the Methodist founder John Wesley. Click here for more information The British Federation of Film Societies National Conference for Community Cinemas, Sheffield, 19th -20th September Mathieu Amalric: 'Stade de Wimbledon ' and Q&A, London, 20th September The South London Gallery and the Institut Francais are hosting a screening of actor and director Mathieu Amalric's 2002 feature 'Stade de Wimbledon '. The rare screening is part of a programme of films that explore the links and overlaps between contemporary art, cinema and documentary, and a film that had also been included in Crossing Borders, the Vertigo/Cahier du Cinema hosted season of films presented at the Institut Francais in 2006, which resulted in the series of podcasts in Vol 3 Issue 2. Mathieu Amalric (see Vol 3 Issue 8 for the article on 'Heartbeat Detector ') will be present for a Q&A after the screening, held at Hackney's Rio cinema, just round the corner from Vertigo's office. For more information click here Pedro Costa: 'O Sangue (Blood)' and Q&A, London, 23rd September As part of the Kinematheque programme of screenings, Second Run film is hosting the first UK screening of Pedro Costa's 1989 debut feature 'O Sangue (Blood) '. Costa will be in attendence for a Q&A with Jonathan Romney, discussing his work, including 'Colossal Youth ', profiled in Vol 3 Issue 9 For more information on the event click here Abandon Normal Devices, Liverpool, 23rd -27th September AND kicks off with five days filled with screenings, exhibitions, public interventions, debates and workshops. Highlights of the festival this year include a masterclass with Apichatpong Weerasethakul; The Yes Men - an exhibition and screening of the new documentary; a new large-scale video project by Krzysztof Wodiczko; Real Time: a conference discussing showing art in the age of new media; and Rebirth of a Nation - DJ Spooky provides a new live soundtrack to DW Griffith's 'Birth of a Nation '. For more information click here Filmfest Hamburg, Hamburg, 24th September to 3rd October 2nd Branchage Film Festival, Jersey, 1st to 4th October This year the 2nd Branchage Film Festival has expanded and added more imaginative new films and events. Venues for screenings include the war tunnels, the castle, a church (screening 'Into Great Silence ', Vol 3 Issue 5), a barn ( 'Sleep Furiously ' with Q&A, Vol 4 Issue 3) the Opera house, and a drive-in cinema in the park. Special events include Kim Longinotto's (Vol 4 Issue 2) new Sundance award winner 'Rough Aunties ', Winstan Whitter's Legacy in the Dust (Vol 4 Issue 2), Man of Arran with a live soundtrack by British Sea Power, and A Jersey Jape, the launch of Andrew Kotting's new 'Gallivant'-style (Vol 3 Issue 6) project for 2010. For more information click here Cineuropa.org screenplay training course - ongoing Cineuropa.org, the European cinema portal, is now offering an online scriptwriting course in English, French, Italian and Spanish, based on a direct and personalised contact between the participants and the teacher Following the first trial lesson, which is available, free of charge, on the website, the course is structured in eight lessons over 14 weeks, offering essential theoretical and practical notions in scriptwriting, highlighting the differences between cinema scriptwriting and other creative forms. Follow ups with the tutor and the practical aspects provided by the exercises are at the core of the project. There are no deadlines and candidates can apply anytime during the year. Call for submissions: Electric December 2009 Electric December is open for the submission of short films made by young people aged under 21 years. The Electric December Online festival brings together short films by young filmmakers from all across Europe - showcasing 24 films during December - one for every day before Christmas - like an electric Cinema Advent Calendar. They are looking for films, including fiction, documentary or animation, less than 5 minutes long, by filmmakers under 21 years old, and completed since September 2008. Submission is free. For more information and submission guidelines click here Call for Submissions: Potenza International Film Festival 2009 Potenza Film Festival, held in Italy this year, is seeking submissions to the competition categories of Feature, Documentary, Short and Mobile Phone film. Awards will include up to 30,000 euros in goods. The festival will be screening from December 1st to 5th this year. For more information and submission guidelines, click here Call for Submissions: The European Independent Film Festival 2010 Since its inception, The European Independent Film Festival (ECU) has become an ideal place in Europe for independent filmmakers to screen their films to large international audiences, to network with producers and distributors as well as exchange ideas with other indie filmmakers. Held in Paris in March 2010, the competitive ECU festival is seeking features, shorts and documentaries, as well as short and feature scripts, and entries to the 'Made on Mobile' category. In addition, for the first time this year there is a new Scriptwriting competition if you have not yet made your film. For more information click here
