Legendary filmmaker Peter Whitehead was at the heart of Swinging London, chronicling the youth explosion, the burgeoning popular music scene and the counterculture of the 1960s. Now the BFI releases two of his films for the first time including ‘Wholly Communion’ (1965) and ‘Benefit of the Doubt’ (1967), coupled with a new interview with the artist and additional rare footage. This is a fascinating document of the radical, experimental, literary and theatrical scenes of 1960s London.

3 - EVENTS AND SCREENINGS

Vertigo sponsors The Sheffield Documentary Festival, Sheffield, 7th- 11th November 2007

Vertigo is proud to sponsor this year’s Sheffield Documentary Festival which features the following events in which you can have your say:

Firstly, there will be the BBC Question Time on Saturday 10 November at 11.30am. The documentary genre is currently undergoing an intense period of scrutiny and reassessment as it is damaged by accusations of fakery, charged with unfair manipulation, and increasingly marginalised and subject to cutbacks. Is it the end of the line for the genre?  Once the pride of British television, have the channels and the public lost their appetite for documentaries?  In an age of celebrity-smitten, format-crazed factual, who is commissioning them now?  This year’s Question Time will tackle these and other key issues with a panel of leading documentary makers and commissioners. For further information visit https://sheffdocfest.com/view/keynote_speakers

Secondly, there will be a Call to Action: The Doc/Fest – Docagora Plenary on Sunday 11 November at 3.30pm (The Hubs, Sheffield). This year, Sheffield is the forum for the industry to be heard and to respond to attack, giving the opportunity for documentary makers and fans to put together a call to action. This is your chance to come and put your case forward, and have your say! Delegate passes are now available from https://sheffdocfest.com/account/login including access to all films, sessions, masterclasses and Doc/Fest parties. Further details of the programme are available on the website.

‘In the Wake of a Deadad’– Dilston Grove, London, 3rd October – 11th November

This is a new monitor installation by acclaimed filmmaker Andrew Kötting which explores - according to the artist - “the bonds of patriarchy and the secular exorcism of a difficult relationship”. The installation takes the form of 65 separate films showing the inflation of large inflatable effigies of Kötting’s Deadad’s life and his Deadad’s Deadad (his Grandad) in various locations around the world. In addition, this interesting artwork is cutting across all disciplines and is also underpinned by autobiography and personal experience. In other words, this is an attempt to consolidate ideas triggered by the death of Andrew Kötting’s own father and to present them by using an assortment of media. See more in the Vertigo article on the installation from Volume 3 Issue 1
