2 - COMPETITION

PETER WHITEHEAD DVDWin a copy of ‘The Politics of Documentary’ by Michael Chanan from the BFI

Is documentary a genre? Does it have a greater claim to truth than a fictional feature or short? The latest book of Michael Chanan is an exhaustive review of the documentary film offering a wide-ranging study of international documentary film-making and giving a fresh perspective on its history and techniques. Indeed, Chanan traces the history of documentary from the first Lumière films to John Grierson and his contemporaries, through Free Cinema, Cinéma Vérité and Direct Cinema, to the resurgence of high profile contemporary documentary.

For your chance to win a copy of the book, email the answer to the following question, along with your full contact details, to vertigo@vertigomagazine.co.uk

As part of the Cinéma Vérité movement, the documentary ‘Chronique d’un Été’ was made in 1961. Who directed it?

The Smoking Cabinet: Festival of Early Cabaret and Burlesque Cinema, London, 7th to 9th December

The second weekend of December announces the opening of The Smoking Cabinet – the UK’s first ever showcase of early burlesque and cabaret themed cinema. The Smoking Cabinet will be composed of rarely screened shorts and full length films celebrating the moving image from the belle époque to Weimar Berlin with the aim of building an audience for, and awareness of, cabaret inspired early cinema including the work of Fernard Léger, Man Ray, Percy Smith, Adrian Brunel, Jean Renoir, Georges Méliès as well as featuring turn of the century music hall stars, circus performers, early erotica and performing animals. By focusing exclusively on cinema and moving image activity from between 1894 –1933 The Smoking Cabinet will offer a more restrained, delicate and imaginative depiction of sexuality that sowed the seeds for not only the grindhouse exploitation movies of the post war American underground, but that also explores the beginnings of the artist film and video movement. The festival will also present inspiring and knowledgable talks and discussions on burlesque and cabaret films.

Vertigo presents ‘Profit Motive and the Whispering Wind’, Brighton, Saturday 1st December

This is a UK Premiere of John Giavito’s inspired and radical new contribution to the hybrid genre of essay film. From the Wobblies to Malcolm X, Chicago to Chavez, Gianvito’s camera visits the traffic islands, malls, roadsides and martyr sites of those who variously stood and were cut down for the crime of speaking truth to the violence of state and corporation on behalf of their communities and comrades. With his camera locked off in the spirit of James Benning, Gianvito testifies with the lens to the little remembered sacrifices and struggles across the centuries. Utterly committed but closer to Tarkovsky than agit-prop rhetorical, Profit Motive hymns another America, and places the spirit of place with the people against power. Introduced by Gareth Evans, Editor of Vertigo
