1 - VERTIGO NEWS

The new Spring issue of Vertigo, Opening the Doors of Perception: Liberating the Image, out now


Vertigo’s latest print issue came out last month and it is proving very popular with readers. The issue includes an exclusive free DVD of artists’ films from Film London’s Film and Video Awards, featuring visionary short films by filmmakers Andrew Kotting, Desperate Optimists, Tim Shore, Carol Morley, Hannah Collins, Georgina Starr, Jonathan Hodgson and Chris Newby. 3 - EVENTS AND SCREENINGS

'Longing’ (Sehnsucht), BFI Southbank, extended run from May 18

German cinema is currently experiencing a remarkable revival. In the current print issue, Vertigo takes a closer look at the New German Cinema, including Valeska Grisebach’s feature debut ‘Longing’. Screened recently at the ‘Voices outside of the Frame’ season of new Geman cinema at the Ciné Lumière, it is now showing in an extended release at the BFI Southbank. Bombs at Teatime, Birmingham, 22 May

This is a great selection of fascinating films which provide an illuminating glimpse of 1940s Britain by observing the living conditions, the Home Front and domestic life of the time. In other words, ‘Bombs at Teatime’ is a real reflection on the British society of the past and a portrait of a nation and its people. A discussion will follow the screening. Hannah Collin’s ‘A Current History’  BFI Southbank, London, 23 May

An ongoing series of FLAMIN (Film London Artists' Moving Image Network) supported artist screenings will present the London premiere of Hannah Collins' ‘A Current History’. Profiled in Vertigo in Volume 3 Issue 3, the film was made in Beshencevo, a village situated on the outskirts of the Central Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod, ‘A Current History’ follows the Chiline family and other inhabitants of the village, as they each adapt differently to life in the post-Soviet era. Following the screening, Hannah Collins will be in discussion with curator Mark Nash.

LUX – Invisible Mend, The Lounge Gallery, London, 24 May - 24 June

Curated by Ian White and LUX, 'Invisible Mend' is a group show of young artists presenting a collection of works drawing their material from radically different sources addressing a set of formal, political or historical questions. 'Invisible Mend' will extend into a series of events throughout June. There is no charge to attend any of these events but places are very limited so pre-booking is required. La Cittadella del Corto – International Festival of Short Fiction, Trevignano Romano, Roma, Italy, 30 May - 3 June

The thirteenth edition of La Cittadella del Corto – International Short Film Festival will present about 50 selected films divided in two traditional competitions including International and Italian Film. Furthermore, there will be a special event with the retrospective of shorts from Japan, selected among the best newer productions. Krakow Film Festival – Poland, 31 May to 5 June

For its 47th edition, the Krakow Film Festival will present 46 films in competition for the Golden Dragon Grand Prix with Andrzej Zulawski (featured in the current print issue of Vertigo) as the chairman of international jury on the Film Festival. Midnight Sun Film Festival – Finland, 13 - 17 June

Course - no.w.here presents Light Reading Series 7, London, 30 May

This is the launch of Light Reading Series at a new location in the East End. Light Reading's 2007 series will start with a conversation between the artists Hilary Koob-Sassen and Steven Ball. There will be also the screening of extracts of Hilary Koob-Sassen’s work. Places are limited so booking is essential. This June, a forthcoming screening and performance New Lands will be programmed at the BFI Southbank. Call for submissions – 13th Encounters Short Film Festival, Watershed, Bristol

The Encounters Short Film Festival will run from 21 to 25 November 2007, and it is now possible to submit your films on-line. Film works must not exceed 30 minutes duration including credits. An announcement of the selected films will be made in early August. Call for submissions - 3rd Oska Bright Film Festival

Last call for submissions for the 3rd edition of the National Festival of short films which will take place in Brighton on October 15 and 16 - with two days of screenings, master classes, and an awards ceremony.  Films to be submitted must be made by learning disabled people and no longer than 10 minutes. Course - London Film School, MA Screenwriting

The MA at the London Film School is a unique one-year screenwriting programme within the context of a diverse filmmaking community. The objective is to develop the writer's original voice through small group and one-to-one mentoring from industry professionals. Call for submissions - Oska Bright 3rd Film Festival

Oska Bright, the first film festival anywhere in the world run by, and for, people with a learning disability. Oska Bright is now accepting submissions for its next festival. The 3rd national festival of short films made by people with learning disabilities will take place in Brighton on 15th and 16th October 2007, even bigger and better than before, with two days of screenings, master classes, and even an awards ceremony! A unique aspect of the Oska Bright Festival is that it is organised by a team of six learning disabled artists, with support from Brighton-based learning disability arts organisation Carousel and community film makers Junk TV. We are looking for films made by learning disabled people. Films must be no longer than 10 minutes, and prizes will be awarded in various categories for the best films, which will include filmmaking bursaries with partner production company JUNK TV. Workshop - Hooray For Bollywood, script writing workshop, National Media Museum, Bradford, 10 June

If you are interested in writing an Asian or Bollywood film script or if you would like to make a Bollywood short this is for you! As part of the Indian International Film Awards being held in Yorkshire, Screen Yorkshire is holding a free one day scriptwriting workshop - including scriptwriting for shorts, feature films, insight into Asian storytelling and Bollywood genres. Call for submissions - Swansea Bay Film Festival

The Swansea Bay Film Festival honours the individual voice, and its mission is to provide a worldwide public forum for independent and experimental filmmakers and to offer educational outreach.The Swansea Film Festival 2007 will take place in Swansea, South Wales, UK, between Friday June 1st and Sunday June 10th. The Festival is organised in association with the Dylan Thomas Centre Swansea, the Department of Adult & Continuing Education of Swansea University (DACE) and the City & County of Swansea. The films selected for the festival programme will be chosen by a special committee from the entries submitted and  on line voting will help determine the films selected for screening. Films to be screened will be announced on Monday 7th May at a special event. The final award winning entries will be selected by a Festival Jury. The London Film Festival (LFF) is committed to incorporate a strong presence for avant-garde and artists' film & video in its programme. For several years, their ‘avant-garde weekend’ has presented a concentrated selection of artists' work, with many of the makers attending screenings. To be eligible for the festival, works must have been made within the last two years, or be archival restorations that have not yet screened in the UK.
