2 - EVENTS AND SCREENINGS Kawamoto the Puppet Master, Bristol and touring, March to May Dedicated to the documentary engagée, the International Human Rights Film Festival focuses on the legacy, the impact and the struggle for respect of human rights all around the world. With screen talks and Q&A, the festival will be hosting important figures of the documentary filmmaking such as the founder of Mamcumba International (producer of ‘War Babies…Nes de la Guerre’). The Festival will take place on March 26th, in Paris, France. For more information click here London International Documentary Festival, March 29th to 5th April Once again, London will be hosting the 2nd edition of the festival -- “A Conversation in Film”-- devoted to documentary filmmaking. From Barbet Schroder’s ‘Terror’s Advocate’ to Ari Tamaddon’s ‘Are You Happy’, the event will gather a wide range of films that stand as cinematic testimonies of our contemporary world. Partnered with the British Museum and the Margaret Mead Documentary festival, the festival will screen ‘Are you Happy’ by Ari Tamaddon to start off the festivities with his insight on contemporary Iranian people’s understanding of happiness. For more information and the full programme click here Tricky Women Film Festival, Vienna, March 27th to 31st The fifth edition of Tricky Women, a festival exclusively dedicated to female animator’s work will take place in at the end of the month in Vienna. Celebrating female animated film-makers from around the world, the competitive event promotes the directors’ exciting work over 5 days, with screenings of 56 animated films of all lengths and styles. For more information and a full programme click here Film Jamaica season, London Barbican, 28th to 30th March As part of the season Film Jamaica, ‘Smile Orange’ by Trevor D. Throne, will be screened at the Barbican on March 28. This classic adaptation of the Jamaican director’s namesake play, amusingly chronicles a waiter’s dreams of success. Other treasures of both classic and contemporary Jamaican film are included in this mini-season, which is taking place in conjunction to the stage show of ‘The Harder They Come’. For more information and tickets click here WorldFilm: Tartu Festival of Visual Culture, Estonia, March 24th to 30th Worldfilm: Tartu festival of Visual Culture celebrates worldwide documentary filmmaking for the fifth year. With both Estonian programmes (including a focus on documentaries about Estonian writers) and international programmes, this year the festival will include a retrospective of visual anthropolgist Timothy Asch and ‘Homo Urbanus’, a series of 8 films about the relationships between humans and th city. For more information click here CinematICA: Peter Whitehead, London, April 27th A rare screening of Peter Whitehead’s short film ‘When I was Young’, with the director introducing the event, a collection of 9 iconic Pop films from the 50’s and 60’s. The thematic film programme exaines the emergence and legacy of the Pop Art movement of 1950’s and 1960’s. Among other characteristic and representative films of the movement the event includes ‘Broadway By Light’ (1957) by William Klein and ‘Andy Warhol’s Exploding Plastic Inevitable’ (Ron Nameth, 1967). For more information click here See the Vertigo article (Vol 3 Issue 4) on Peter Whitehead’s MANIFESTO: On Independence Britspotting, Berlin and touring, April 10th to 7th May Britspotting is a festival exclusively dedicated to supporting British and Irish feature films, documentaries and shorts in Germany. Premiering the crème of independent and mainstream films from the UK, the festival will tour for 3 weeks to 3 main centres: Berlin, Cologne and Stuttgart. This years programme features Asif Kapadia’s ‘Far North’, (see the Vertigo piece in Vol 3 Issue 7) and ‘Derek’, Isaac Julian’s documentary and tribute on the writer and director Derek Jarman, in which Tilda Swinton’s Vertigo-commissioned letter of remembrance features as the main narration. The BFFS is seeking to appoint new Trustees to their Board. The national support and development agency for the film society and community cineam sector is looking for Trustees who are interested in film exhibition and distribution, and who can bring this charity organisation expertise and commitment in its work. Since its inception 60 years ago, the BFFS has supported specialised cinema exhibition, advice, technical support and film education to over 300 member organisations across the UK. Initial appointments are for three years, on an expeses paid basis. For more information about BFFS and for contact details click here Call for submissions: NOISE festival 2008 Described as a Virtual Festival of Youth Creativity, NOISE invites creative people twenty five years and under across all creative fields – film, graphic design, music and other visual arts -- to submit up to 6 works. Functioning entirely on the website, the festival supports and showcases young creatives. For more information visit the NOISE website Call for submissions: AURORA festival The Norwich based Aurora festival celebrates an alternative approach to the prospect of the moving image, focusing on manipulated moving image works. This year the festival is adding a new ‘Installation’ strand to the programmed categories for the event that will take place on November 12th to 15th . For more information on submitting your work click here Call for Entries: Shortwave Short Film CompetitionFilm London’s Shortwave is calling for entries for a short film competition to celebrate at its 9th anniversary. The event has been designed to promote talented independent filmmakers and their work. The 15 best shorts will be screened at 93 Feet East in London and will be awarded with the audience-chosen best-film award. Shorts, music videos and animation are all welcome. Films should not be longer than 10minutes. For more information click here Calls for Submission: Docupolis Documentary Film Festival of Barcelona Docupolis is seeking submissions for the 8th annual festival, to be held this year from 1st to 5th October. Documentaries of all lengths are sought and submission is free. For more information and submission guidelines click here Call for Submissions: Flag Metamorphoses AnimationFlag Metamorphoses is a participatory art project - a continuously growing series of animations where the flags of every nation in the world will transform into each other through flash animations. Between each two flags, scenes appear to show an aspect of the relations between the two countries - an exploration into the meaning of imagery on flags, aiming to create interrelated associations through questioning, reassessing, fluidizing and re- mixing of diverse national iconography.
