1 - VERTIGO NEWS

New Issue out now

The new issue of Vertigo is out now. It is taller, thicker and more colourful, and features new regular columns and sections, and has full colour covers and artists'  pages.

Highlights from the new magazine include an interview with 'Keane' director Lodge Kerrigan, profiles on filmmakers Eugène Green and Jafar Panahi, new writing from Iain Sinclair, and an essay by Don DeLillo. Plus artists' pages from Tereza Stehlikova, writing on experimental filmmaker Matthew Noel Tod, spotlights on Argentine Community Cinema and the Cinematheque Paris, book reviews, documentary, experimental, competitions and more.

Vertigo New Issue launch, Curzon Soho, 17 June 2006

The new issue of Vertigo will launch with an event at the Curzon Soho, London, on Saturday June 17th. Fingertips is a live music film event, a collaboration between experimental filmmaker Tereza Stehlíková, with an original soundtrack performed live by Touch label's Philip Jeck. The event will also feature a screening of a Stan Brakhage short from his 1994 'Chartres Series'.

Vertigo and Cahiers du cinéma season at the Institut français, London 

A further event to mark Vertigo's launch is our encounter with Cahiers du cinéma at the Institut français. A series of paired screenings mapping the territory covered by both magazines will begin with the UK premiere of Le Petit Lieutenant,  in the presence of director Xavier Beauvoir (tbc). Roundtables will look at the role played by both magazines in developing a broad film culture, and the influence of experimental work and world cinema on the aesthetics of contemporary cinema. Guest speakers will include Cahiers du cinéma editor Jean-Michel Frodon, screenwriter Tony Grisoni, film critic Jonathan Romney, documentary maker Ken Fero, writer Iain Sinclair as well as Vertigo editors and contributors.

BBC Film Network: Short Films From New British Filmmakers

The purpose of the BBC's Film Network is to provide a platform for new British filmmakers to show their work. The site is screening three new short films every week. The interactive site also allows people to comment on and rate films and provides filmmakers with tools to create online profiles and exchange tips, advice and ideas.

Rhizome.org: Connecting Art and Technology

Rhizome.org is an online platform for the global new media art community supporting the creation, presentation, discussion and preservation of contemporary art that uses new technologies in significant ways. Founded in 1999, Rhizome ArtBase is an online archive of new media art containing some 1600 art works, and growing. The ArtBase encompasses a vast range of projects by artists all over the world that employ materials including software, code, websites, moving image, games and browsers to aesthetic and critical ends.

Established in 1954, the Sydney Film Festival is one of the leading international film festivals and a key Winter event in the city. Presenting a sophisticated program of over 200 films, this year's festival will be showing new Australian feature and documentary films and shorts and contemporary world cinema with a focus on Denmark and Latin America.

Taormina Film Festival, Italy, 20-25 June 2006

The Taormina Film Festival in Sicily is held at the Greek Amphitheatre and at the Congress Hall of Taormina. The festival will have a special focus on Italian films, as well as showing international shorts and feature films, and running cinema workshops.

'Africa Mine' film season, Tuesday evenings, Peckham Multiplex, London

In partnership with Black Cultural Archives, Black World and Film London, Africa Mine presents a programme of features and documentaries that explore Africa through the eyes of Africans. Screenings throughout June and July will include panel discussions and an opportunity to meet filmmakers, media professionals and experts from Africa and the diaspora.

'Without Boundaries' Artists' Film and Video, ICA, London, until 18 June 2006

This specially curated artists film and video, feature and documentary programme explores what Europe means now. Contemporary artists’ work is gathered together to challenge pre-conceived conceptions of culture, place, identity and history with work from over 15 different countries. First shown at Brief Encounters Festival in Bristol, now showing with two key Hungarian found footage films.

'Ghosting', Artists’ Film and Video Screenings, A Bond, Watershed and Arnolfini venues, Bristol, until 25 June 2006

Developed in response to the growth of contemporary artists’ interest in archives, 'Ghosting' is a programme of exhibitions, screenings and discussion exploring its relationship to the moving image. ‘Ghosting’ alludes to the idea of re-awakening ghosts of the past, it is also a technical term used to describe the appearance of an overlapping secondary image on a television or a display screen.

'Screenland' Landscape in Film and Video Exhibition, Whitstable Museum and Gallery, Kent, until 25 June 2006

An exhibition of artist's film and video work bringing together six artists whose landscape films and videos explore space, place and psychological states. It is supported by a programme of events, including a one-night cinema-style screening of artists' films and videos of the landscape. Artists include Emily Richardson, Joe King and Rosie Pedlow, Peter Collis among others.

'Future City - London', Architecture and Film Season, Barbican, London, until 25 June 2006

As part of the London Architecture Biennale 2006, the Barbican Centre will be screening a series of architecture-related films, open-air cinemas will be located along the 5km Biennale route and artists' film installations will take place in unusual and exciting venues around London.

'Projectile' Anarchist film and culture festival, Newcastle upon Tyne, 16-18 June 2006

Projectile is an annual film festival based in Newcastle aiming to use film to explore the philosophical, cultural and political themes of anarchism. Roger Graef Documentary Filmmaker Masterclass, London, 21 June 2006 

DocHouse and The Grierson Trust has been presenting masterclasses in May and June with distinguished British documentary filmmakers. The final in the series features Roger Graef, who will be showing rarely seen early work alongside new documentaries as well as reflecting on the influences and inspirations that have shaped their careers.

'Light Reading Series' with Nicky Hamlyn and Simon Payne, London, 28 June 2006

'Nausea' by Matthew Noel-Tod, Outpost Gallery, Norwich,  2-21 July 2006

Matthew Noel-Tod's 54 minute artist film Nausea is a synthesis of text and image that draws inspiration from Impressionism, On Kawara, Barnett Newman and the existential diary of Jean-Paul Sartre from which it adopts its title. Cambridge Film Festival 2006, 6-16 July 2006

Highlights from the 26th festival include a brief history of erotic cinema, a Michel Gondry retrospective, British Public Information films, New German Cinema, daily free Artists Film and Video screenings and Claude Friese-Greene's 'The Open Road' with a live music accompaniment. The festival will also show a complete retrospective of fashion photographer and filmmaker Bruce Weber's work.

Call for Submissions - Festival du Nouveau Cinéma de Montréal, Quebec, Canada, 18-28 October 2006

The Festival du Nouveau Cinéma de Montréal (FNC) is a multidisciplinary event that aims to promote cinéma d'auteur (art-house cinema), independent video and creativity in new media. The FNC is looking for new and original feature, short, medium-length and digital works. Only works produced after 1 January 2005, not previously shown in Quebec are eligible.

Call for Applications - PULSE 2006, Film London Digital Shorts Scheme 

Film London's Digital Shorts Scheme is now open for applications, offering awards of between £2,000 and £10,000. The PULSE scheme is open to new talent in the London region and offers an opportunity to make short digital films for a variety of exhibition and distribution platforms. At least 8 films will be commissioned with running times of between 1 and 10 minutes.

Call for Submissions - 'Radar' Music Video Film Festival, September 2006

Radar is a new competitive music video festival that will show shortlisted  films at the Apple Regent Street Store's Theatre, London in September 2006. Shortlisted films will also be shown on the festival's sponsor's sites (Domino, Warp and Tummy Touch Records), as well as winning cash and music prizes, and commissions. Production company Colonel Blimp will represent the overall winner.

Call for Applications - BRITDOCART Funding Scheme

A new  funding scheme from the Channel 4 British Documentary Film Foundation, in conjunction with Arts Council England and with the support of the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) will award four UK, or UK-based artists up to £30,000 each this year to make a documentary film. BRITDOCART is open to artists from any field, be it visual, video, performance, or installation art.
