2 - EVENTS AND SCREENINGS Knitflicks, Compton Verney, Warwickshire, 19th to 20th July 7inch Cnema returns for a weekend of knitting-related shorts and animation to complement the new Fabric of Myth exhibition. Films are showing in the same café setup as last year's Shadowfilm weekend, and if you'd like to have a bash at knitting free needles and wool and informal tuition will be available. The lineup includes psychedelic Yugoslavian animation, Simon Hook's Knit Your Own Karma, work from Cast Off and straight8, a Lego knitting machine and - inevitably - a couple of Michel Gondry videos. For more information click here Japanese Cinema for Busy People II, London, 9th to 30th July And back again by popular demand, the Japan Foundation’s Japanese Cinema for Busy People series of lectures. This 4 lecture series follows on from the first series, with themes explored including Japanese Cinema and Political/Social issues, Women Behind the camera and Japanese Independent Cinema. All lectures are free, but require booking in advance. For more information and booking click here BRITDOC, Oxford, 23rd to 25th July BRITDOC has established itself as a serious documentary-makers festival, with invaluable networking opportunities, advice from the best industry experts and one-on-one surgery sessions. (this year including John Battsek (Producer, Passion Pictures) and David Courier (Film Programmer, Sundance Festival). Masterclasses include TALK TO ME, which looks at interview technique with chair Kate Aide, criminal psychologists, army interrogators and physotherapists and YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS, which examines what makes a documentary funny, with Larry Charles, Jeremy Chilnick (producer for Morgan Spurlock), Andy Bichlbaum from the Yes Men and Kurt Engfehr (Michael Moore's editor). For more information click here Rushes Soho Shorts Film festival, London, 23rd July to 1st August Taking place at a number of venues across Soho and beyond, the annual Rushes festival fruns from 23rd July to 1st August this year. Including funding, editing, Sound and gaming seminars, a special Australian Day, and daily Apple Store seminars on ‘The Future of...’. as well as countless short films. For more information click here David Lean – 100th Anniversary Conference, London, 24th to 25th July 14th Sarajevo Film Festival, 15th to 23rd August This year for the first time the Sarajevo film festival joins the FIPRESCI group of festivals and its top film will be awarded a FIPRESCI award. The main focus of the festival this year is films from the region of Southeast Europe. Also included this year is the 2nd Sarajevo Talent Campus, with lecturers including Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Mike Leigh and Slavoj Zizek. For more information click here Ballerina Ballroom Cinema of Dreams festival, Nairn, 15th to 23rd August The first annual Ballerina Ballroom Cinema of Dreams festival will take place this August in Nairn, Scotland. Screening three films per evening, festival audiences will watch an eclectic selection of cinema from the comfort of beanbag chairs in Nairn’s old Victorian Ballerina Ballroom. Created and programmed by Tilda Swinton and Mark Cousins, the festival grew out of a pair of articles written for Vertigo by Tilda and Mark – examining what film means to us and how cinephiles are born. Call for Applications: SKILLSET Toronto Talent LabTalent Lab is an artistic development programme held during the Toronto International Film Festival that provides emerging talent with an unparalleled creative experience through an introduction to the global community of filmmaking. Over a four-day period, selected participants will be given the opportunity to interact with, and learn from, internationally acclaimed filmmakers. Applications are sought from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) filmmakers to participate in the Talent Lab programme held in Toronto between 2nd to 7th September 2008. For more information and applicaion details click here Call for Submissions: Exposures Film festival The UK’s largest Student film and moving image festival is currently seeking submissions for the 2008 festival to be held in Manchester in November. Films must be under 30 minutes in length, have been made whilst studying any post A-level course, and been completed between August 2007 and July 2008. To submit your work click here Call for Submissions: The London Greek Film Festival The LGFF unites Greek producers and artists from all over the world, in addition to artists that exhibit Greek historical or cultural themes and individuals whose films make use of the Greek language, or whose works are produced in the country itself. The first LGFF is a new concept in that it invites work from international artists of Greek heritage as well as from others who have an interest in Greece and Greek related themes. In addition to the in house screenings and events, held from November 13th to 16th, the festival will capitalise on digital technology to present an ONLINE festival that will showcase the best contemporary talent in film and video based work. For more information click here Call for Proposals: Animate TV 2009Animate Projects are inviting UK based artists and animators to submit proposals for films to be broadcast on Channel 4 and 4mations, the new animation online channel that launches in September 2008. They are looking for ambitious, original and thought-provoking proposals that develop the possibilities of animation techniques: films that explore ideas of what animation is, with challenging content, as well as new forms and processes, compelling narratives and challenging content. Based on the proposals, Animate Projects will commission three films, with budgets up to a maximum of £20,000 as well as providing production and editorial support. For more information click here Call for Submissions: S1 / Salon Annual SeasonS1 Artspace in Sheffield is currently inviting submissions for its annual season of artists' film and video screenings, S1 / salon. Artists are invited to submit works for three new programmes to be screened at S1 later this year. S1 / salon is curated around material selected from an open call with the intention of creating a platform for presenting film & video without prescribed themes or categories. There are no stipulations for material other than the work must be under 15 minutes. For more information click here Call for Submissions: The Native Spirit Festival 2008Native Spirit is a non profit organisation, made up of volunteers dedicated the empowerment and preservation of indigenous communities and cultures, worldwide and specifically the Americas. Begun in 2007, the Native Spirit Festival spanned venues in London, and presented screenings of features, shorts and documentaries, plus Art, Mosaic, Photographic, and Sculpture exhibitions, poetry readings workshops, talks and Q&A sessions with some of film directors. This years festival will branch out to other locations in the UK as well. The festival is now accepting short and feature length film submissions to this years festival. Films may be documentary or fiction and all films produced by indigenous filmmakers and productions which feature aspects of indigenous life, history, culture, traditions, art etc. are eligible for submission.For more information click here Call for Entries: ‘Your Winnipeg’ filmmaking competition Inspired by the release of the new Guy Maddin feature My Winnipeg, Soda Pictures (in conjunction with Four Docs, 3 Minute Wonders & The Branchage Film Festival) are holding a filmmaking competition. Filmmakers are invited to submit a 3-minute documentary about their hometown, being as experimental and creatively adventurous as you dare. Guy Maddin will join a jury of industry professionals to select the winning entry, which will be screened on Channel 4 and feature on the UK DVD release of My Winnipeg. The winner will be rewarded with £1500 and a holiday to Maddin’s Winnipeg. Three runner-up films will also be screened on Channel 4 and the winners will each receive £1500. For more information click here Call for Submissions: Berwick-upon-Tweed Film and Media Arts Festival The Berwick-upon-Tweed Film and Media Arts Festival is a non-competitive event, held every year in November, which aims to promote quality moving image work. The majority of short and feature films (fiction, documentary, experimental or retrospective) and artist film and video work are selected by invitation, although submissions are also welcome. Films submitted for selection must have been completed after January 2007 and not had a UK release prior to September 28, 2008. For more information click here Call for Applications: LUX Associate Artists Programme LUX Associate Artists Programme (AAP) is a unique 12 month professional development course for artists working with the moving image, starting in November 2008. The scheme aims to provide an intensive course of development focused on critical discourse, extending to the practical and infrastructural issues that present challenges for artists working with the medium through workshops, seminars, mentoring and a final funded project. LUX AAP is open to all artists working with the moving image who have completed a graduate or postgraduate course in the last three years. For more information click here Calls for Submissions: 11th One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival One World would like to invite documentary makers to send films for the next edition of the festival. Feature length documentaries, short documentaries (up to 35 minutes) and animations (up to 35 minutes) are considered for the festival program. Held in Prague in March 2009, the festival will include over 120 documentaries from all over the world, anInternational Competition of feature length documentaries, Right to Know Competition for investigative documentaries, Short Forms Competition and International guests, thematic categories, retrospectives, workshops, and many special events.
