With the new summer issue of Vertigo – Volume 3 Issue 6 - we take a look at faith and meaning in the moving image. From articles on Devotional Cinema, to Girls Communion rituals, William Blake and metaphysical art in Halifax, Vertigo explores the role of meaning in our visual culture. NEW ISSUE LAUNCH EVENTThe new issue will have a late summer launch event on Wednesday September 12th, from 6:00 to 7:00 at the Curzon Soho Cinema in London. A programme of short films, encompassing themes from the new issue will be screened. More information, including the confirmed programme, will be posted in the August newsletter. 2 - COMPETITION Long acclaimed as a cinematic masterpiece, Bergman’s The Seventh Seal is a stunning allegory of a man’s search for the meaning of life. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original release of 1957 Cannes Special Jury Prize award winner, the new digitally restored film (cert. PG) is being re-released in cinemas across the UK on July 20th by Tartan Films. In tandem with the video installation, there will be a series of paintings, drawings, models and objects, generated throughout the production of the work, also on display. Further information about the show go to: South London Gallery will be transformed into 'The Weasel’, 14 - 29 July ‘Pop Music and Contemporary Art', this is a musical venue showcasing artists working with popular music. This is the presentation on a stage designed by Assume Vivid Astro Focus, 'The Weasel' combines artists' film and video with live performances, which reflect upon and investigate the cultures and sub-cultures of popular music. Wilhelm Sasnal's Vincent Award winning gritty documentary ‘The River’ features a series of studio recordings of New York bands. Other films include contributions from kitsch Californian pop stars Los Super Elegantes and Charles Atlas's video for Anthony and the Johnsons. For the full programme of events and artists involved see Fantasy Filmfest, Munich – Germany, 24 July – 22 August For its 21st edition, the Fantasy Filmfest will present 77 international features gathering an incredible diversity of film genres, including lethally dysfunctional families, exciting variations of life after death, a bunch of evil children, thrillers, ghost stories, psycho splatter beaus and evil belles. BRITDOC ’07 – Keble College, Oxford, 25 – 27 July This year, Britdoc ’07 will introduce a new theme - Documentary meets Art. The festival will offer a wide range of screenings, photographic exhibitions, panel discussions, pitching forums and networking events, artists and filmmakers to engage and explore art as a form and documentary. For more information visit https://www.britdoc.org/festival/index.php Shot By the Sea – Hastings Film Festival, 27 July – 4 August This is a great opportunity to see an exhibition of installations and ongoing events dedicated to digital culture and new media during the festival week.Do not miss - The Strangeness of Seeing - Premiere installation by the artist Nichola Bruce in collaboration with Rebecca E Marshall (as featured in the new issue of Vertigo), an epic series of 26 moving image works, an unusual alphabet of seeing exploring the many processes of perception. Celebrating its 9th edition, the festival will see this year the addition of a Documentary category, complementing the original five categories: short film, newcomer, title sequences and idents, music video and animation. Events include London Film Academy masterclasses, Sony HD seminars and a Shooting People panel event and pub quiz. Locarno International Film Festival, Switzerland, 1 – 11 August For its 60th edition, the International Film Festival of Locarno presents a stimulating panorama of contemporary auteur cinema, where young talent will join the circle of established directors to compete for the prestigious Golden Leopard. There will be a jury of seven major figures, who will choose one of the twenty competing fiction features coming from all over the world, regardless of format, from 35mm film to digital cinema, screened as world or international premières. Vertigo partner: Portobello Film Festival 2007 – London, 2 – 21 August In its 12th year, the festival aims to be bigger and better than before, with a massively developed performing arts programme (to include magicians, street performers, theatre troupes, poets and the like). Rough Trade record label will be programming an event to showcase new upcoming bands, and as always, there will be over 600 indie films being screened. Events will include Nicolas Roeg introducing his classic gangster film ‘Performance’, Filmmakers Against War to raise awareness of UK and international War Laws and Barney Platts-Mills, who is making a magic realist film in Morocco, using untrained locals from Tangiers. This year, Dokufest will present 15 exceptional films running for the Documentaries, Shorts and Animation: International Documentary Competition. You will have the chance to see the most recent production of features and short docs bringing for the first time works of artists, including Kim Longinotto and Aliona van der Horst to mention only a few. In addition, the festival will offer debates on films from the feature, short and animation short sections, hosted by the film critic Alex Leo Serban, the Festival selector. For further information go to http://www.sanfic.com/ Open Air Film Festival Weiterstadt – Germany, 16 – 20 August Open Air Filmfest Weiterstadt or also called the ‘Woodstock of short films’ is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and will take place on the arcadian site of the Braunshardter Taennchen. The festival will present short films of all genres, formats, and lengths, but also long feature films and documentaries. The YoungCuts 2007 Film Festival presents the best short films from all over the world by filmmakers of 25 years and under. The festival will open its doors with a special Opening Gala on August 16 in benefit of Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada. Plus, The Air Canada enRoute Student Film Festival will take flight along with YoungCuts this year to help in the production of Air for its very first enRoute Student Film Festival. One Minute Film and Video Festival Aarau – Switzerland, 17 – 19 August The International 1-Minuten Film- and Video Festival offers a pragmatic public platform for this special and interesting issue around the film media including shortfilms of different genres, including great comedy, drama, philosophy. Every year, it organises an international contest with an ongoing special program with 1-Minuten-Film-Series and Filmshows from the archives of other festivals. The Norwegian International Film Festival – Haugesund, Norway, 17– 24 August This year, the festival will present about 25 films that will receive a theatrical release in Norway during the coming fall/winter/spring. It is a tradition that both the opening and closing films are Norwegian. Plus, the New Nordic Films programme will consist of around new 30 films from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland. In its 13th edition, the Sarajevo Film Festival aims to present important and innovative films of high artistic value made throught the world. In addition, it is recognized by film professionals from all over the world as the pinnacle point for networking for all wishing to learn more about the possibilities this region has to offer. This year, the festival presents a wide programme selection of both competitive and non-competitive films, focusing on the region of Southeast Europe with its filmmakers competing in Feature, Short and Documentary film section.
CCall for entries – Filmaka - July Competition Filmaka is announcing a new competition to inspire filmmakers from around the globe. The new theme is ‘Lost and Found’ where total creative freedom is allowed. Film entries must run between 1-3 minutes in length and can be in any languages (English subtitles are encouraged). Each month, up to 20 ‘filmakas’ win cash prizes and the chance to show their talent to an award-winning jury and affiliates. Development Workshops 2007 - Euroscript, London, 30 July Call for entries - Exposures 2007 The 14th exposures UK Student Film Festival is now accepting entries for the 2007 Festival (3-6 December 2007) at Manchester. You can now submit your films in any of the four main competitive categories Drama, Documentary, Animation and Experimental. It is the only student film festival of its kind to take place in the UK. For more information about entering your films go to www.exposuresfilmfestival.co.uk Call for applications - University College London Hospitals (UCLH) Arts Commission Call for Video Submissions & Competition -Design Event 07 (DE07) Design Event is an annual UK festival showcasing cutting edge work from designers across all disciplines. Design Event's next edition - DE07 - takes place in Newcastle (October 2007), and film & new media curators Cinefeel are currently putting together a video programme for screening at the Baltic Contemporary Arts Centre. Cinefeel are inviting filmmakers and animators to send in work which has something to say on the subject of this year's DE07 theme of 'How do we want to live?'. Call for applications - Launch of SPARK script development scheme for 2007 Screen Yorkshire is seeking applicants for SPARK 2007, a script development scheme for experienced and new writers. This year, SPARK seeks applications from more experienced writers to develop a piece of work that will be read by the UK Film Council and the BBC writersroom at the conclusion to the scheme. Applications from new and emerging writers are all welcome. The festival will traditionally be held under the auspices of Václav Havel. Send your submissions for the next edition of the festival. Feature length documentaries, short documentaries (for the short competition films must be less than 35 minutes) and animations (up to 35 minutes) are all welcome. Call for submissions - The Birds Eye View Festival The Birds Eye View Film Festival 2008 will open on March 6th with 6 days of shorts, features, documentaries and special events, panels and parties. The festival is seeking submissions from women filmmakers from around the globe, to be a part of a showcase programme of innovative and inspirational shorts, features and documentaries. Awards will be presented to Best Short Drama, Best Short Animation, Best Documentary and a special Award for Innovation. For further information please check: www.birds-eye-view.co.uk Call for applications - Piemonte Share Award: Digital Art Prize 2008 Piemonte Share Festival announces the second edition of the Share Prize 2008 for digital art. The competition jury will award a prize to the work (published or unpublished) which best represents experimentation between arts and new technologies. The contest is open to any Italian and foreign artist using digital technology as a language of creative expression.
