'Free Cinema' 50th Anniversary Event, National Film Theatre, London, 5 February 2006

In February 1956 a group of young film-makers launched their Manifesto at the NFT, they named the programme 'Free Cinema' and took their cameras out onto the streets, capturing a new naturalistic and unscripted look at England. The selected films are: 'O Dreamland' by Lindsay Anderson, 'Momma Don't Allow' by Karel Reisz/Tony Richardson, 'Nice Time' by Alain Tanner/Claude Goretta, 'Enginemen' by Mike Grigsby and 'Food for a Blush' by Elizabeth Russell.

'Italian Kings of the B’s: the Secret History of Italian Cinema 1949–81', Free screenings, Tate Modern, London, until 10 February 2006.
The development of the New Italian Cinema from the 1930s onwards was made possible in part because underlying its progress existed an underground of directors and craftsmen who embraced ‘low practices’ in their efforts to invent the first true Italian genre cinema. Celebrating the recent rediscovery and restoration of forgotten and overlooked treasures from this significant undercurrent within Italian cinema, this film programme surveys the thrilling, hard-hitting work of Fernando Di Leo, Sergio Martino, Nino Pagot, Lucio Fulci, Massimo Dallamano and Mario Bava. The series coincides with Tate Modern’s Collection display Beyond Painting: Burri, Fontana, Manzoni, which presents groundbreaking Italian painting from the same period and similarly marked by its ambiguous relationship to creativity and destruction.
