December Online issue now on the Vertigo website

The December issue of the Vertigo Online is now live and available to all readers on the Vertigo website. This month we feature a report from Michael Chanan, president of the International Jury at MiradasDoc on the state of documentary; an interview with ‘Wendy and Lucy’ director Kelly Reinhardt; an reappraisal of Sam Peckinpah on the eve of a BFI retrospective of his work; a look at Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s new feature ‘Three Monkeys’ and an appreciation of Anna May Wong, star of E A Dupont’s 1929 classic ‘Piccadilly’. Vertigo’s Winter/Spring Issue out in January

The new issue of Vertigo  - Volume 4 Issue 2 -- will be out in late January. The newissue will include interviews with the Dardennes brothers and Jennifer Reeves; a look at New Chinese Cinema; reports from Bristol’s Georgian Film Festival and the London International Documentary Film Festival; Franny Armstrong on ‘The Age of Stupid’; Chris Petit on Godard’s ‘Histoire(s) du cinéma’; a manifesto on the state of African film production; and much more. Look out for it at the end of January 2009. In the meantime, the current issue – Vol 4 Issue 1 – is available on newsstands and direct from Vertigo.

The Faber Academy is presenting ‘A Deconstruction of Film Narrative’, a three-day masterclass with Oscar-nominated independent filmmaker Mike Figgis. Centred around his 4-screen, real-time experimental feature ‘Timecode’, the masterclass, from 2nd to 4th of February, 2009 will examine the methods and processes used to create the film, as well as discuss the concept of time and narrative.

Call for Submissions: The European Independent Film Festival 2009

Since its inception, The European Independent Film Festival (ECU) has become an ideal place in Europe for independent filmmakers to screen their films to large international audiences, to network with producers and distributors as well as exchange ideas with other indie filmmakers. Held in Paris in March 2009, the competitive ECU festival is seeking features, shorts and documentaries, as well as short and feature scripts, and entries to the new ‘Made on Mobile’ category. Call for Submissions: Glimmer: Hull Short Film Festival

Glimmer: The 7th Hull International Short Film Festival is seeking submissions its next festival which will take place from 21st-26th April 2009. Glimmer, the largest short film festival in the North of England, is looking for innovative and exciting films from across the globe of any genre that run to a maximum of screening time of 45 minutes. Previous festivals have screened a wide selection of short films including dramas, documentaries, artists’ film and video and animation. Selected films for the 2009 edition will be eligible for such awards as the Glimmer International Award, Glimmer UK Award and Glimmer Yorkshire Award all of which will come with cash prizes for the winning filmmakers. Call for Submissions: Emotion Pictures Documentary and Disability: 3rd International Festival, Athens 2009

The Emotion Picture festival was created to further awareness, acceptance and integration of disabled people and to encourage film-makers, disabled or not, to take an active interest in this area and address the widest possible public. This year the festival will take place in Athens in conjunction with the 4th International Conference “People with Disabilities and Mass Media”. A competitive festival, the organisers are seeking both short and feature documentaries on disability with a production date after 1/1/2005. Call for Entries: ThinkSync Films 4th Short Film Competition

ThinkSync Films was created to bring together the independent music and film industries to encourage collaboration.  It seeks to search out, celebrate and reward creative new independent filmmaking talent, with particular attention to the role music plays has launched its fourth short film competition. Filmmakers are asked to produce a film of less than ten minutes duration, incorporating music available from their website. The competition is designed to. The music, detailed rules and FAQ's are all available on the website, along with previous years' winning films, so you can get an idea of the concept.
