Indeed, this touring tribute to a new generation of Czech filmmakers presents a wide range of most recent international successes including ‘Beauty in Trouble’, a beautifully shot study of love and redemption by Jan Hrebejk. In addition, the programme also includes the stunning puppet animation, ‘Fimfarum II’, based on Jan Werich’s legendary tales, and the moving feature documentary ‘Marcela’. Finally, the season will be complemented by the offbeat ‘undergound’ film ‘It’s Gonna Get Worse’, a story of drop out culture in the 1970s that has already gained a cult following. For more details about the programme and the UK tour visit http://www.czechcentres.cz/london/program.podrobnosti.asp?ID=24260 Patrick Keiller’s exhibition – The City of the Future at BFI Southbank Gallery, 23rd November 2007 – 3 February 2008 For the first time, Patrick Keiller presents the multi-screen installation version of his research project ‘The City of the Future’ at the BFI Southbank Gallery. This is an exploration of urban space at the turn of the 20th century and a virtual landscape composed of 68 early “actuality” films made between 1896-1909, arranged in the gallery on a network of maps from the period. Visitors are invited to explore this landscape, both by moving among its sequential screens and by departing from the programmed sequence, to create an individual journey using the ‘menu’ functions of a DVD. For more details, go to http://www.bfi.org.uk/whatson/southbank/film/8115 Semiconductor ‘Brilliant Noise’ – Nationwide touring exhibition: including Fabrica, Brighton, 30th November 2007 – 13th January 2008 Semiconductor are Brighton-based artists Ruth Jarman and Joseph Gerhardt. In 2005, the artists undertook 6 months of research and experimentation, working alongside space scientists at the NASA Space Sciences Laboratories (SSL) UC Berkeley, California. Three new works produced from this extraordinary residency will form a touring exhibition and programme of special events. In addition, Fabrica, a gallery that was formerly a church will house a large scale three screen surround-sound installation of ‘Brilliant Noise’, an award winning work made from raw satellite footage of the sun. Plus, on 6th December, Semiconductor will give a presentation on their experiences at the NASA space sciences laboratory and screen their new space science related works. Space scientist Chris Davis from the STFC will reveal the science behind the solar images as well as current NASA missions to the sun. Over the last 17 years Flicker Fest has become the most competitive International Short Film Festival in Australia and one of the main festivals on the world circuit, giving the opportunity to discover new film work coming from international filmmakers. The 2008 festival will screen 15 different short film programmes including 11 programmes of International, Australian and documentary in competition. Tromso International Film Festival, Norway, 15th – 20th January 2008 In its 18th edition, the Tromso International Film Festival will present an exclusive selection of 10-15 international feature films competing for the Aurora prize. The 2008 Sundance Film Festival will offer a wide range of special competitions, including Independent Film Competition (Documentary from explorations of cultural trends and political movements), World Cinema Competition (Documentary and Dramatic categories) to mention only a few. Course - LFS Workshops – Lighting for Drama on Digital Format, 4th – 17th January 2008This is a two week practical cinematography workshop with Award winning DoP Nina Kellgren BSC who is leading this intensive workshop and is offering the chance to participate in planning, lighting and shooting a drama sequence on HD. Inspired by a selection of classical paintings from the National Gallery, the participants will work with 5 shooting briefs emulating, in HD, the dramatic sensibilities of light, shadow and composition of each painting. This course is a collaborative learning opportunity open to those who require either initial or further familiarization with the process of lighting and shooting drama on HD. In order to take part you need to be currently working in the Camera Department with a minimum of 2 years experience in the film/TV industry. This course is open to all grades of the camera department. Only 10 places are available. Call for submissions – 60 Seconds of Fame 60 Seconds of Fame is an innovative short film initiative from the British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) in association with Orange, inviting budding film-makers to submit a 60 second short film, based on the theme 'unite'. BAFTA juries will select 15 regional winners, who will receive two tickets to the Orange British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 10 February, 2008. The overall winner will be chosen by a BAFTA jury and announced at the ceremony and the winning film will feature as part of the BBC One broadcast of the event. Call for entries – Moves08 Building on moves07’s success in positioning itself as a key platform for the industry and audiences interested in screen-based work exploring 'choreographed movement’, Moves returns for the fourth year in Manchester, Lancaster and the North West of England. They are now looking for films, videos and installations exploring the notion of 'movement on screen' for the upcoming festival. There is a special focus this year on the interaction of sound and movement in screen-based work and like every year a North West showcase. Call for submissions – ThinkSync Films launch 2008 Thinksync Films launches its competition for independent film makers for the third year running bringing together independent film makers with independent record labels and publishers. Entrants to the competition submit short films which incorporate one or more tracks downloadable free of charge from Thinksync Films’ website, but only the music supplied by Thinksync Films is permitted to feature in the short. The competition rewards the most skilful and appropriate use of the music within the film.
