3 - EVENTS AND SCREENINGS 17th Chichester International Film Festival, Chichester, 21st August to 7th September This year’s festival has grown yet again, and includes many special programmes, including Oscar nominated foreign films, the films of Michael Redgrave, a focus on Sir David Lean and a full retrospective of the work of producer Kenith Trodd. In addition, there will be gala screenings and a special selection of British films. More information and the full programme 5th London International Animation Festival, London, 1st to 7th September For the past five years, the London International Animation Festival has been sourcing amazing, rare, haunting, surprising and gorgeous animations from all over the world (220 films from 28 countries this year) and LIAF proves that animation can be dark, sad, shocking, abstract or brilliantly original. This year's festival has a special focus on animated documentaries, and includes a roundtable discussion with Canadian animator Josh Raskin, creator of the brilliant Oscar-nominated animated interview ’I Met the Walrus’, documenting a 1969 meeting with John Lennon. More information and the full programme 2nd Russian Film Festival, London, 18th to 28th SeptemberScreening contemporary and classic Russian films, plus a special Documentary programme, the second Russian Film Festival will run from 18th to 28th of September, followed on September 29th by a day-long symposium covering Film and Politics, and discussing filmmaking collaboration between Russia and Britain. The September Online issue of Vertigo will have a special Russian Film Festival focus. More information and the programme 13th Bite the Mango Film Festival, Bradford, 19th to 25th September Bite the Mango celebrates the cinema of black and Asian countries and filmmakers. Taking place at the National Media Museum, this year’s festival has a special focus on the films of Columbia and Malaysia, plus a special lifetime award will honour the work of veteran director Waris Hussein. Call for Entries: ‘Your Winnipeg’ filmmaking competitionInspired by the release of the new Guy Maddin feature My Winnipeg, Soda Pictures (in conjunction with Four Docs, 3 Minute Wonders & The Branchage Film Festival) are holding a filmmaking competition. Filmmakers are invited to submit a 3-minute documentary about their hometown, being as experimental and creatively adventurous as you dare. Guy Maddin will join a jury of industry professionals to select the winning entry, which will be screened on Channel 4 and feature on the UK DVD release of My Winnipeg. The winner will be rewarded with £1500 and a holiday to Maddin’s Winnipeg. Three runner-up films will also be screened on Channel 4 and the winners will each receive £1500. In addition to having your short broadcast, there will be prizes for the best films, including holidays for 2, Avid Media Composer software and Raindance courses. For more information click here Call for Applications: LUX Associate Artists Programme LUX Associate Artists Programme (AAP) is a unique 12 month professional development course for artists working with the moving image, starting in November 2008. The scheme aims to provide an intensive course of development focused on critical discourse, extending to the practical and infrastructural issues that present challenges for artists working with the medium through workshops, seminars, mentoring and a final funded project. LUX AAP is open to all artists working with the moving image who have completed a graduate or postgraduate course in the last three years. They are seeking 25 experienced and emergingfilmmakers seeking to develop their feature film career.Successful applicants producers, screenwriters and directors - will take part in a 5-day programme during the Festival in October in which they willmeet with leading film professionals in a series of workshops andmaster-classes exploring the international film industry - from financing toexhibition. Participants then join the T-S-D network of over 100 alumni whomeet bi-monthly at the BFI Southbank. Feature length documentaries, short documentaries (up to 35 minutes) and animations (up to 35 minutes) are considered for the festival program.
