With the new summer issue of Vertigo – Volume 3 Issue 6 - we take a look at faith and meaning in the moving image. From articles on Devotional Cinema, to Girls Communion rituals, William Blake and metaphysical art in Halifax, Vertigo explores the role of meaning in our visual culture. NEW ISSUE LAUNCH EVENT - September 12th, 6:00 to 7:00, Curzon Soho, LondonThe new issue is having a late summer launch event on Wednesday September 12th, from 6:00 to 7:00 at the Curzon Soho Cinema, London. The summer edition delves deep into the image to bring you visions that reach the parts other film and video works don't even know are there. The issue offers a veritable harvest of good things to renew and inspire, and this fine shorts programme reveals the breadth of the territory, from 'Dad', Daniel Mulloy's startlingly honest family anatomy, through Anna Lucas' calmly observant 'Hunt and Hide' to 'Maggid Street', Iain Sinclair's gothic, alchemical London reclamation. Add in perennial favourites from island maestros Andrew Kötting and Margaret Tait and, it's clear, the eyes have it. 2 - COMPETITION This new Wallflower Press publication, written by Dave Saunders, explores the seminal ‘direct cinema’ movement, a pivotal moment in both documentary cinema and modern American culture. The book investigates the work of filmmakers such as Robert Drew, D.A. Pennebaker and Frederick Wiseman, who used mobile cameras and synchronised sound to reveal the hidden side of 1960s America and create the prototype for all 'fly on the wall' documentaries to come. Through these works, Dave Saunders takes a compelling look at 1960s counter-culture in its artistic, musical and political forms. The book is the first publication in a new Wallflower Press ‘Nonfictions’ series. For an extract see the latest On line issue of Vertigo. For your chance to win, email the answer to the following question, along with your full contact details, to vertigo@vertigomagazine.co.uk Music and politics were subjects that leant themselves well to the Direct Cinema movement.
