The new issue of Vertigo is out at the end of April – and includes an exclusive FREE DVD of Ken McMullen’s feature ‘1871’ The latest issue of Vertigo - Volume 4 Issue 3 – will be out at the end of the month: in bookshops, on newsstands, on the website and, if you are a subscriber, in your own mailbox. Just as the new print issue examines how film is a catalyst of evolution and change, Vertigo’s own website has also recently welcomed evolution and change. Now live on the website, Showcase is a new bi-monthly space profiling a selected range of film/video clips and trailers from new, re-issued or currently exhibited independent and artists’ moving image work. Works that have been highlighted in past issues of Vertigo are presented together with new and experimental gallery work and upcoming and current arthouse releases. Check out the new Showcase site 2 – COMPETITION Win a Second Run DVD In recent issues of Vertigo we have featured new additions to Second Run’s catalogue that are made by women filmmakers. These titles include Ann Turner’s exploration of a 1950’s Australian childhood ‘Celia’ (featured in the upcoming issue of Vertigo) and Kim Longinotto’s documentary double-disc ‘Divorce Iranian Style / Runaway’ (read the article in Vol 4 Issue 2 ) - both welcome additions to a consistently excellent, intelligent and innovative dvd label. 3 - EVENTS AND SCREENINGS Brief Encounters - Vertigo Talk #2: ‘Local’, London, April 23rd 6:30 pm to 8:15 pm This is the second talk in the Vertigo Brief Encounters series. Each of the talks considers how images relate to place and what they can do - politically, culturally and as a form of opposition. Entitled ‘Local’, this talk will discuss the creation of works relating to the local and, in particular, the locality of East London. Key themes include: counter culture, alternative histories, architecture, open space, community and cinema. The panelists include Vertigo’s editor Gareth Evans, visual artist and filmmaker Anja Kirschner (see a trailer of her film ‘Trail of the Spider’ on Vertigo website) and writer and filmmaker Iain Sinclair (read his latest in the current issue of Vertigo ) Tickets for the talk are free, but space is limited, so booking is advised. For more information check the Vertigo website or go to http://www.iniva.org/events/what_s_on/local Glimmer 7th Hull International Short Film Festival, Hull, 21st - 26th April Manchester-based moves returns for the 5th year and has gone national exploring the narrative possibilities of movement on screen through more than 20 screenings and installations in 60 venues throughout the UK. Audiences can enjoy treats in cinemas, bars and restaurants, and at home (through their online programme).Highlights of this year's festival include a special retrospective on Czech surrealist master Jan Svankmajer, talk and performance on live cinema, YouTube real-time VJing and video game performance, poetry on film, a rare screening of 1926 German first animated feature The Adventures of Prince Achmed, plus a special event to introduce the emerging genre that is Machinima – a hybrid of augmented reality and do-it-yourself animation. This year's title 'All Change!' is a reflection on the rapidly expanding talent that has emerged from the recently hailed Romanian New Wave, with debut features alongside new work by established directors. The theme of change is equally visible in the films’ stories, many of them served with a good dose of humour. Most of the screenings will include Q&A’s with the directors. For more information and the full programme go to www.romanianculturalcentre.org.uk/filmfestival The Great Game: The Afghanistan Film Festival, London, May 1st to 10th, 2009 The Great Game: Afghanistan Film Festival, presents a wide programme of features, shorts and documentaries - including 9 premieres and many live Q&A sessions – which give a celluloid glimpse into the joys, sorrows and adventures of everyday life in Afghanistan. As awareness of Afghanistan seeps more into British news, so this timely festival opens up an exploration of the country’s history, culture and future. Part of a wider Afghan cultural festival, the film festival encourages the exchange of ideas between artists and audiences through a series of Q&A sessions from visiting filmmakers. The film festival will welcome talent including Siddiq Barmak, Lucy Gordon, Liz Mermin, Phil Grabsky, Seema and Abdullah Shadaan, Immo Horn, Michael Winterbottom and Havana Marking to discuss their films following the screenings. The International Buddhist Film Festival plans to offer a perspective on world cinema with a Buddhist touch. The festival will celebrate Buddhist ideas and inspiration represented in all types of film, from Eastern documentaries to Hollywood blockbusters; showing more than 40 films from 18 countries including 27 UK premieres. Screenings include films incorporating broader Buddhist themes and ideas as well as movies made by Buddhists, with a selection including features, documentaries and shorts. Special strands include ‘Profiles’ and ‘Mind the Gap’, and the festival will welcome special guest speakers and filmmakers. For more information go to festival website
Call for Entries: Fast Forward Film Competition The Co-operative is calling for budding young movie-makers who dream of changing the world, to submit entries to the prestigious Co-operative Young Film-Makers Festival. Young filmmakers aged 19 and under can submit entries for the 2009 Festival which will be held in Bradford in October 2009.Through drama or documentary, animation or comedy, music video or silent movie, film-makers can tackle issues that concern them, such as climate change, Fairtrade, animal welfare or healthy living. Alternatively they can make a movie about their life, community or experiences. Entries should be no more than six minutes long.
